The Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and 5 brick Stations of the Cross were built in Levice Calvary in the beginning of the 18th century. The chapel was rebuilt to a small church in 1821. By the half of the 20th century, the Calvary used to be a popular destination for strolls of Levice citizens. The stations and the small church were damaged during World War II battles. The sacral area ceased to exist in 1950’s. Civic association Patrimonium servandi established in spring 2007 initiated the project of renewal of Levice Calvary. Fourteen Stations of the Cross were built and the torso of the historical church was treated. In 2008, the chapel roofing was done as well as new Stations were built. In 2010, a 7 metre high metal cross was installed on the tower structure in the Calvary. The observation tower with a view of the town and surrounding villages is accessible for the public from May to the end of October, each Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. There is also a relax zone with views, benches and information boards.
Another municipality project “From Calvary to the Cross Hill” interconnected two historical localities into one complete route, making an interesting and not demanding terrain for tourists and bikers with a length of approximately 7 km. Bikers ride around “hajloks” – vineyard houses. On the way, you may find “Cross Hill treasures” hidden among the vineyards. There are 4 information boards providing interesting information.
Cross Hill is located in Nitra vineyard region, about 2 km northwest from Levice centre, the area of the vineyards is more than 70 hectares. There are more than 250 vineyard houses “hajloks”. The most popular wine varieties are Pesecká Leánka (Fetesca Regala), Rizling Vlašský (Welschriesling), Frankovka modrá (Lemberger), Cabernet Sauvignon, André, Svätovavrinecké (Saint Laurent), Otello and others.
Historical monuments that can be admired by visitors include the statue of St. Urban, Cross Hill well, cross, and Holy Mary Chapel.
